Fleet Mechanic/Service Technician

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty municipally owned automotive machinery and equipment. Also performs general labor and operates equipment for the maintenance and preservation of streets, alleys, public roadways, and other public property. This position requires 24-hour emergency call out/on call scheduling availability.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED: Works under the direct supervision of the Street Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Removes, repairs, installs engines, transmissions, and differentials in construction equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes and dump trucks. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces component parts of gasoline engines, including valves, pistons, gears, and bearings. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces component parts of diesel engines, including rods, plugs, valves, pistons, and crankshafts. Repairs oil, water, and fuel pump systems. Cleans, repairs, and adjusts carburetor and fuel injection systems. Removes, repairs, and installs hydraulic pumps and systems. Relines brakes, fits and adjusts brakes systems. Repair steering and front-end assemblies. Adjusts ignition systems, including spark plugs, condensers and accessory units. Performs clean-up work at service garage. Repair small motor equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, and pumps. Performs welding jobs as needed with wire feed welder, and stick welder. Purchases general automotive supplies and bills repair costs to the appropriate department. Inventory parts and tools. Operate and maintain light and heavy-duty equipment to include wheel loaders, motor graders, one-way plows, trucks and other equipment with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or more. Assist with buildings and ground maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned. Repairs tires as needed. Mounts and dismounts tires from vehicle and rim on all fleet vehicles and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Two years experience in a garage or service station or any other equivalent combination of experience and training would be preferred.. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Possess a valid driver’s license. Applicants must obtain a Tennessee CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) within 60 days of beginning employment. Applicants must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen Associates degree in Auto Mechanics and/or Diesel Technology is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Good knowledge of the procedures, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of construction equipment and machinery. Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and make reports on work performed. Skill in the use of the tools, machinery, and equipment of the mechanic trade as well as computers. Possess positive skills in working with the public and other city employees. Ability to follow written and oral directions and safety policies. Excellent work habits. Self-motivation and self-starter skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
